Hi, I’m Demelsa, but most people call me Mels!

I’m a creative person who loves working with my hands, from woodworking and embroidery to painting and sewing. I enjoy trying new things that push me out of my comfort zone.

People often describe me as cheerful and curious. Right now, that means converting a bus into a camper with plans to travel fulltime. (And I’ll continue commissions!)

From digital to painting

I’ve always loved drawing, and around COVID I started exploring digital art. While it was fun, the rise of AI made me rethink the value of handmade work. Since then, I’ve focused more on creating physical art and spending less time behind screens, connecting more with the outside world!

Life with animals

I grew up surrounded by animals, and last year welcomed my cat, Nori, into my life. He’s my little muse and keeps me company while I work. I try to bring my love for animals into each painting, and I always enjoy hearing the stories behind the pets I paint, many of them are truly moving.

My painting style

I work in oil paint, mostly for my personal, expressive pieces using the alla prima (wet-on-wet) technique. I love how it lets me shape the paint and make it feel alive.

I use bold brushstrokes for bodies and backgrounds, smaller details for faces, and occasional pops of bright color to make the painting lively. The goal is a portrait that feels dynamic and full of life, rather than static or stiff.

A perfect gift
One of a kind piece of art

Working with photos

A good reference photo makes a big difference. I look for:

Expressions that show personality
Eyes that are visible and expressive
Interesting poses that add movement
Strong contrasts of light and shadow

Ready to commission?

If you’d like a portrait of your pet, I’d love to create a painting that feels personal and true to them.
